LEED Lab

The LEED Lab offers the opportunity to gain practical experience in green building assessment and thus lowering Manhattan University’s carbon footprint.

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is the most widely used green building rating system in the world. Any building has the potential to achieve silver, gold, or platinum certification based on a variety of sustainability measures such as energy efficiency, water use, and waste reduction. This system is organized and supported by the U.S. Green Building Council.

Manhattan University has engaged in direct initiatives toward achieving a fully sustainable campus through the development of the Raymond Kelly Student Commons and the Higgins Science and Engineering Center. By joining LEED Lab, you would be gaining real-world experience in sustainability work, as well as helping Manhattan University move closer to fulfilling this ambitious goal.

Students in the course assess the performance of the LEED-certified existing buildings on campus by learning how to implement, meter and track building systems such as electricity, energy, water, and transportation.

Why Should Students Join the LEED Lab?

LEED Lab offers the opportunity to gain practical experience in green building assessment and thus lowering Manhattan University’s carbon footprint.

LEED Lab introduces students to sustainability in construction and enhances their environmental literacy by:

  • Explaining LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) green building principles;
  • Teaching students how to assess existing campus buildings for sustainability in operating and maintenance;
  • Preparing them to take the LEED Green Associate Examination.

The course code for The LEED Lab Capstone course is REAL 420 for undergraduate students or MBA 641 for graduate students.

Students will recieve hands-on experience and training to be able to become an accredited LEED professional. These are skills that employers look for and make you more successful in your career after graduation.

LEED Lab looks great on a resume. Students will interface with Facilities personnel, create green campus policies and procedures with Administrators, and make recommendations to help campus buildings earn the coveted LEED Operations and Management (O+M) certification. Funding may be available for testing fees.
