How to Manage and Mediate Conflicts in the Workplace and Home
Through open discussion, review of case studies, participants in this one day program will learn what conflict is, how to identify the stages of conflict, understand the retaliatory cycle of conflict, and learn the art of mediation from a facilitative viewpoint, and participate in role play meditations that will help them further their understanding of how to manage conflicts in themselves and others.
This program will prepare participants for leadership and everyday roles as business leaders and as family members, when it comes to understanding conflict in the workplace and everyday life situations. The participant will leave with a different set of lenses when viewing what conflict is and how it is identified in various stages.
Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:
- Understand and identify the elements of a conflict.
- Draw on experiences to identify and discuss conflicts in their own lives and in the workplace.
- Understand the stages of conflict escalation and strategies to manage differences.
- Gain and apply skills in the art of managing conflicts.
- Practice via role plays real life mediations that will further the participant's understanding of this art.
This program will utilize a hand-out booklet of slides used in the class, videos, real-life case studies and open discussions to enhance the learning experience.
One day in-person session
September 10, 2020 (Thursday)
9 AM - 4 PM
What is conflict? Program participants will obtain an understanding of how they view conflict and what it means to understand the value of conflict. The four N’s of conflict will be discussed and why it is necessary to understand various view points.
II. Managing Ourselves In Conflict
To better understand and manage conflict, participants will explore how they manage conflict within themselves. Positions and Interests will be discussed and group discussions will further the understanding of what positions and interests are and why they are important for understanding. Real life conflicts will be explored in group settings that will help identify what positions and interests are.
This will help participants understand the meaning of understanding positions and interests in themselves and others.
III. Managing Ourselves In Conflict – Part II
Group discussions will enhance the learning experience allowing participants to discuss conflicts in the workplace and at home. Discussion will focus on consequences of not managing the conflicts and will evolve into tips for managing conflicts in a productive manner. A video presentation will give participants tips on managing conflicts.
IV. The Retaliatory Cycle
Learning about the retaliatory cycle and the behaviors that cause conflicts to continue will be explored. Resolution of conflicts will be looked at and options for resolution will be explored.
V. 10 Key Principles to Conflict Competence
Becoming conflict competent is a goal that requires practice and understanding of the key principles of conflict competence. These will be explored to further the participants understanding of managing conflict in themselves and others.
VI. Mediation Introduction
The art of mediation of conflicts will be explored. Understanding what mediations are and how they can be a productive way to resolving conflicts will be discussed. Various types of mediations will be looked at and how they fit into the workplace and at home.
VII. Mediation Roleplays
Program participants will have an opportunity to experience mediations from various view points as a mediator and as those in conflict. This is a powerful experience to better understand the art of mediations and how they can help resolve even the most serious conflicts.
IX. Bringing it All Together
At the end of this program, participants will make written commitments to becoming conflict competent and will discuss the role they will play in helping to manage and resolve conflicts.
