2021 Year in Review
Here we revisit the most memorable moments of 2021, a year that helped us return to the people and places we love at Manhattan College.

The Patricia and Cornelius J. Higgins '62 Engineering and Science Center opened and was formally dedicated in the fall. The 30,000-square foot academic facility on the South Campus is named for Patricia G. Higgins, Ph.D., and Cornelius J. (Neil) Higgins ’62, Ph.D., who provided a $5 million leadership gift for the Center, located adjacent to Leo Hall.

American Express Chairman and CEO Stephen J. Squeri made a $10 million donation to benefit infrastructure and campus facilities. Honoring the Squeri family’s legacy, the building that houses Smith Auditorium and the Chapel of De La Salle and His Brothers will be named Squeri Hall. “With this extraordinary gift, Steve and his wife, Tina, add an exciting new chapter to the long history of the Squeri family’s truly exemplary support for Manhattan College,” said President Brennan O’Donnell.

The men’s basketball team earned Bronx bragging rights when it came from behind to beat the Fordham Rams with a score of 64-60. "I thought our kids showed great grit," Coach Masiello said after the game in Draddy Gymnasium. Perhaps the spirit squad's newest member Brother Jasper was the good luck charm?

The Holocaust, Genocide and Interfaith (HGI) Education Center, founded in 1996, kicked off its 25th anniversary with a full fall schedule of lectures and a gala honoring the Center’s founder, Frederick M. Schweitzer, Ph.D.

The Manhattan College Cross Country Invitational presented by HOKA returned to Van Cortlandt Park in October. The event includes both the prestigious Eastern States Championship elite races along with varsity, junior varsity, sophomore, freshman and modified/intermediate races for both boys and girls.

For the sixth year in a row, Manhattan College is recognized as one of the top 15 colleges in the region by U.S. News & World Report.

The fall 2021 semester brought a full return to campus for students and employees of the College, who could be found once again in the classrooms, on the Quad and participating in in-person activities.

Manhattan was named one of just 52 colleges nationwide by Military Friendly to earn a gold award for the 2021-22 academic year. In particular, the College received high marks for its Veteran Success Programs.

Manhattan College’s department of Intercollegiate Athletics posted a 98% Graduation Success Rate (GSR), according to the NCAA, tops among all Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) schools. Read the story

Manhattan College hosted school-specific, socially distanced in-person Commencement ceremonies for 2021 undergraduate students.

College students represented the Republic of Iraq at the 2021 Model United Nations Conference and earned the Outstanding Delegation prize, the highest award given at the conference. It was only the second time in 40 years that a Manhattan College team received the award.

The Manhattan team claimed its first MAAC Softball Championship since 1999 with a 6-3 win over No. 2 Canisius College. Graduate student Nicole Williams was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Performer.

The College hosted an event series that addressed the need to acknowledge past injustices before we can move to remedy them. Faculty examined whether psychology as a discipline adequately addresses issues faced by Indigenous peoples of the Americas. The event series culminated in a dedication of the Peace Pole, a new monument that was installed on campus in 2020.

Our chemical engineering department began a partnership with Insplorion, an organization based in Sweden that provides research instruments to scientists around the world. Led by professor Samiul Amin, Ph.D., undergraduate and graduate students will work on projects covering biopharmaceuticals and cosmetics. Read the Story

Washington Monthly included Manhattan College on its annual list of colleges doing the most to turn students into active citizens. Student voting on campus increased significantly in the 2020 election, rising to 59.6% that year from a rate of 41.3% in 2016.
