Healthcare Administration B.S.

Lead the organizations that care for people.

Every hospital, clinic, nursing home, and public health agency depends on people who can run it well, and as the country ages, there aren’t enough of them. Manhattan University’s Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Administration prepares you for that work. You’ll start with the life sciences every health professional needs, then learn how health systems are organized, financed, regulated, and led. A minor in public health is built right into the major, so you graduate ready for an entry-level position in healthcare management or for graduate study in the field.

What Set's Us Apart

The Manhattan University Difference

What Sets Us Apart

Many healthcare administration degrees are business programs with a few health courses added. Ours starts from the other direction. It lives in the Department of Kinesiology and Health, alongside exercise science, health science, and public health, so the science comes first and the finance, management, and law courses build on it. The degree includes a public health minor, so you’ll graduate understanding both sides of a healthcare organization- the clinical side and the business side- and ready to work between them.

$123,860 Median Salary

Medical and health services managers earn a median salary of $123,860, with 24% projected job growth through 2035, much faster than average, and about 62,300 openings each year (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics).

Graduate With a Public Health Minor

Every course required for the public health minor is already part of the major. Finish the degree and you finish the minor too, with a second credential that employers and graduate programs both recognize.

Understand the Care You’ll Manage

A year each of biology and anatomy and physiology, plus a course in nutrition, gives you the same scientific grounding other health majors get. When clinicians talk about patient care, you’ll know what they mean.

The Business Side of Health

Courses in healthcare organization and management, financial management, legal aspects of health care, and organizational psychology cover the parts of the job an administrator actually spends the day on: budgets, regulations, and people.

A Practicum With a Real Organization

In your senior year, the Practicum in Public Health puts you on a small team working with a community health organization, such as a local hospital or clinic, to plan an intervention it can use.

Who Gets Care, and Why

Required courses in Ethics in Healthcare and Disparities in Health ask who gets care, who doesn’t, and why. In keeping with our Lasallian mission, you’ll learn to lead organizations that answer those questions well.

The Manhattan Advantage

Why Study Healthcare Administration at Manhattan University

The major is built on a simple idea: you can’t run a healthcare organization well if you don’t understand what it does. So you start where the other health majors start, with biology, anatomy and physiology, and an introduction to public health, plus a math foundation in calculus and data science. By sophomore year you’re studying how the U.S. healthcare system is put together, who pays for what, and where it breaks down. Then the business courses take over: economics, financial management in healthcare, the legal side of running a facility, and organizational psychology, which comes down to getting a building full of people to pull in the same direction.

You’ll also learn to make decisions with evidence instead of hunches. Principles of Epidemiology teaches you to read the numbers behind a community’s health, and Health Research Methods teaches you to go find your own. Foundations of Public Health Policy shows how those numbers turn into rules, budgets, and programs. That’s the public health minor earning its keep inside the major: when you graduate, you can look at a hospital the way an administrator does and at a neighborhood the way a public health professional does. And because this is a liberal arts university, courses in ethics, health disparities, and the social side of medicine keep the people on the other end of every decision in view.

Senior year pulls it together. In the Practicum in Public Health, you’ll join a small team working with a community health organization to plan an intervention it can put to use, then present the plan and explain how the team got there. In Health Research Methods, you’ll design a research project of your own. You’ll graduate ready for an entry-level role in healthcare administration, with real work to talk about in interviews, or for a graduate program in healthcare administration, public health, or a related field.

Why Study in New York City

New York City runs the largest public hospital system in the country, NYC Health + Hospitals, with 11 hospitals across the five boroughs, and it’s home to New York-Presbyterian, Mount Sinai, NYU Langone, and Northwell Health, academic medical centers and hospital networks that rank among the city’s biggest employers. The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene is one of the world's oldest and largest public health agencies. Closer to campus, Montefiore is the Bronx's largest employer, and a few miles down the road, community hospitals, nursing homes, and clinics stretch in every direction. Each one needs administrators, and each is a subway ride from Riverdale. For students in the major, that means practicum placements, internships, and first jobs at the organizations you’ll study in class, in a city where healthcare runs at a scale no other American city can match.

Healthcare Administration: From Science to Strategy

A healthcare administration education at Manhattan University builds skill across everything it takes to keep a healthcare organization running, from the science behind the care to the budget that pays for it. Every course strengthens one of six core competencies, developed through labs, team projects, data work, and the senior practicum rather than lecture alone. Together they produce graduates who can walk into a hospital, a clinic, or a health department and make it run better.

Health Systems

Learn how American healthcare is actually organized: hospitals, physician practices, long-term care, insurers, and public health agencies, how they connect, where the money goes and where the patients go, and where it all falls short.

Healthcare Finance

Read a budget, build one, and defend it. Microeconomics and Financial Management in Healthcare teach you how facilities get paid, what things cost, and how to make the numbers work without shortchanging patient care.

Law, Policy, and Regulation

Healthcare is one of the most regulated industries there is. Legal Aspects in Health Care and Foundations of Public Health Policy cover compliance, liability, patient privacy, and how policy gets made, so the rules don’t surprise you.

Leading People and Organizations

Hospitals run on people. Organizational Psychology and Healthcare Organization and Management teach you how teams behave, how to manage staff, and how to run an organization that treats its workers as well as its patients.

Data and Evidence

Good administrators don’t guess. Foundations of Data Science, Principles of Epidemiology, and Health Research Methods teach you to find the numbers, understand what they say about a community’s health, and build a decision on them.

Communication

Administrators spend much of the day explaining things. From a research paper freshman year to the practicum presentation senior year, you’ll practice making a plan clear to people who have to act on it.

Explore Faculty

Learn From Faculty Who Teach Every Health Major

Healthcare Administration students learn from the Department of Kinesiology and Health faculty, the same department that teaches exercise science, health science, physical education, and public health. They teach the healthcare administration core and the public health courses, advise students across the health majors, and guide the senior practicum from the first meeting with a community partner to the final presentation. Biologists in the Department of Biological and Chemical Sciences teach the science foundation, and psychology and economics faculty round out the business side. All of it happens in small classes, with professors who have time to know where you’re headed and help you get there.
