Mission & Ministry

Rooted in 1853, alive in everything we do today.

Manhattan University is a Lasallian Catholic institution where faith, learning, and service shape how students live and lead. Our mission inspires the classroom, the chapel, and the communities we serve across New York City and around the world.

The Manhattan University Difference

Our Lasallian Catholic Identity

Manhattan University was founded in 1853 by the Brothers of the Christian Schools, a Catholic teaching order inspired by Saint John Baptist de La Salle, the patron saint of teachers. More than 170 years later, that founding vision still shapes who we are. The word "Lasallian" is far more than a label. It is a way of teaching, learning, and living that places the dignity of every person at the center of education.

Born in 17th-century Reims, France, De La Salle left a life of wealth and ordained ministry to serve children who had been denied an education. He believed that learning was the most powerful path out of poverty and that every student deserved a teacher who saw them, knew them, and walked with them. That commitment, to the student as a whole person and to education as an act of service, is what it means to be Lasallian today.

At Manhattan University, our Lasallian Catholic mission drives everything we do: how we teach, how we serve, how we welcome students of every faith and background, and how we send our graduates into the world ready to make it more just.

The Five Lasallian Principles

What Guides Us

The Five Lasallian Principles

Five core principles guide the daily life of our community. They shape our classrooms, our ministries, our service work, and our relationships with one another.

Faith in the Presence of God

We believe in the living presence of God within each individual. Education becomes a vocation, and every classroom, conversation, and act of service is an opportunity to recognize the sacred in one another and to foster the gifts each person brings to the world.

Excellence in Teaching

Education is at the heart of who we are. Our faculty and staff see it as their vocation to faithfully serve and educate the next generation, investing in first-generation, minority, and financially supported students through personalized instruction and close mentorship so every Jasper can thrive.

Respect for Human Dignity and Inclusive Community

We believe every human being deserves dignity and respect. Our Jasper community brings together people of different opinions, backgrounds, and experiences, and we are Catholic and welcoming. We celebrate Mass, host Jummah prayer for Muslim students, and support every faith and identity, building a community where all are seen and supported on and off campus.

An Emphasis on Ethical Conduct

We are called to act with integrity. Rooted in De La Salle's ideals of civility, charity, and respect, we form students to make principled decisions, take responsibility for their choices, and carry honesty and moral courage into their work and relationships.

Concern for the Poor and Social Justice

We stand in solidarity with the poor and advocate for those suffering from injustice. Through service, advocacy, and immersive learning, our community works to improve the immediate conditions of those in need and to address the root causes of poverty and injustice in our city and around the world.
