College To Celebrate Earth Day with Panel Discussion on Urban Green Space
Panel discussion followed by tour of rooftop garden on April 22.
Manhattan College will celebrate Earth Day on Tuesday, April 22 with a panel discussion on urban green space at 4:30 p.m. The event is sponsored by the College’s Center for Urban Resilience and Environmental Sustainability (CURES), and includes a tour of the student designed rooftop garden.
Linda R. Cox, executive director of Bronx River Alliance, will participate in the panel discussion. The Bronx River Alliance works in partnership with New York City Department of Parks & Recreation to protect, improve and restore the Bronx River corridor.
Curt Collier, deputy director of Groundwork Hudson Valley, will also take part in the discussion. Groundwork Hudson Valley is an environmental restoration and community development nonprofit located in the city of Yonkers. The organization partnered with CURES last year to sponsor summer internships at the College, where students had the opportunity to learn how to farm in an urban setting by growing organic produce on the rooftop garden.
In addition, Vjeko Matik, project manager for stormwater planning and ecological restoration at New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, will join the panel. New York City Department of Parks & Recreation is the steward of 29,000 acres of land, which is 14 percent of New York City including Coney Island Beach, Central Park, community gardens, and more.
Please check the College’s calendar for details on additional panelists. The event is open to the community and will be held in Hayden Hall, room 100.
