VITA: Volunteer Income Tax Assistance

Students put accounting skills to work at VITA

Put your accounting skills to work in a professional setting while giving back to the local Bronx community. Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) is an IRS-sponsored program that provides training and certification classes to volunteers who wish to help prepare tax returns for low-income individuals.

Students take prep classes in January and February prior to tax season, and learn a software system that covers a range of tax credits and New York State tax filing. Once certified, volunteers work with qualified local residents in the Fordham Bedford section of the Bronx to help them get the maximum tax return.

How to Join

VITA takes place during the spring semester. All students are welcome to join the VITA program, but School of Business students may find the experience most beneficial. Look for emails with information about signing up in the fall or contact the advisor, Aileen Farrelly, at aileen.farrelly@manhattan.edu.
