Academic Accommodations
The Specialized Resource Center (SRC) coordinates adaptive technology and other academic accommodations for eligible students. Students requesting adaptive technology should contact the SRC at least two weeks before the technology is needed.
Acquisition of Adaptive Technology
- Some adaptive hardware or software may be available from only one vendor because of the specialized nature of the product. When this occurs, the limited availability must be documented by contacting at least two other vendors in the same field.
- All purchases are subject to the requirements established by the University’s business manager.
- Whenever possible, adaptive hardware and software will be installed in an integrated setting, such as a campus computer lab.
- Whenever possible, adaptive hardware and software may be made available to the broader Manhattan University community when it is not being used by a student who requires the accommodation.
- All adaptive technology purchased for use by students registered with the SRC remains the property of Manhattan University.
- Requests must be submitted in writing to the SRC director.
Academic adjustments and auxiliary aids should provide equal access without altering the essential requirements or academic integrity of a course. Faculty input is important when determining how approved accommodations should be implemented.
Students and faculty members are encouraged to discuss the implementation of accommodations during office hours. The academic adjustments and auxiliary aids listed on the accommodation form should be used as guidance. Questions or written requests may be directed to the SRC director.
Requesting a Course Substitution
- Submit documentation supporting the disability diagnosis to the SRC.
- Submit a letter to the SRC that includes:
- The specific course for which a substitution is requested.
- An explanation of how the student’s disability-related needs affect their ability to complete the course.
- The SRC will determine whether additional documentation is required.
- The SRC will consult with the dean of the school in which the student is registered.
- Following this review, one of the following decisions may be made:
- The course substitution is granted.
- The course must be attempted with clearly defined academic adjustments.
- The course must be attempted without academic adjustments.
- An SRC staff member will explain the decision to the student.
A decision will be issued within 25 school days after the SRC receives all required documentation. Students may appeal a decision by following the University’s grievance procedure.
Printed Materials in Alternative Formats
After registering for classes each term, students are responsible for contacting the bookstore to determine which textbooks and course materials are required.
Students who need textbooks in an alternative format are encouraged to create an account with Bookshare. The SRC must verify the student’s eligibility before the account can be approved. Once approved, students may search for and access available textbooks at no cost.
Alternative-format materials that are not available through Bookshare must be requested through AIM, the SRC accommodation management system.
New York State law requires publishers, when possible, to provide universities with electronic versions of textbooks and related materials. Before the SRC can request an electronic file, the student must provide proof that the printed material was purchased.
When materials are unavailable from the publisher, the SRC will explore other sources. If an accessible version is not available by the beginning of the semester, contact the SRC. A reader may be provided temporarily when the request was submitted according to the required procedure and timeline.
Contact the SRC if you experience any problems obtaining course materials in an alternative format.
Testing Accommodations
Testing accommodations are available to eligible students who are registered with the SRC. Exam accommodation requests must be submitted at least two business days before the exam.
Registered students may submit exam requests through AIM using their JasperNet credentials. Once a request is approved, an automated email will be sent to the student and the course instructor.
