Quality Science (minor only)

As a student in this program, you will learn the skills to ensure that medicines, dietary supplements, devices and other products are high quality and safe.

As a student in the quality science minor, you can help make this a reality. This program teaches the processes to ensure that medicines, dietary supplements, devices and other consumer goods meet quality and safety standards. This minor is ideal for students who are interested in careers in the pharmaceutical and medical device industries.

How the Program Works

The quality science minor is offered through a cooperative education model between industry partners and Manhattan University. The industry partners are organized into the Pathway for Patient Health nonprofit consortium.

The Certified Quality Science Micro-Credential

Students who successfully complete this minor with a grade of at least 70% in each Pathway course and receive a passing grade on the courses taken through Manhattan University will also receive a Certified Quality Science Professional (CQSP) micro-credential. Students who earn grades of 95% or higher in all 3 Pathway courses will receive their micro-credential with honors.

The Classes

In this 15-16 credit minor, students will complete five semester-long courses  two in-person Manhattan University courses and three online, asynchronous courses developed by the Pathway Chief Quality Officer Team. These courses are offered as Manhattan University courses through Moodle as SCI 206, SCI 306 and SCI 307.

The two courses offered on-site at Manhattan University include a business acumen course and a laboratory science course. The approved course options are: 

    1. Business courses: ACCT 201, CHML 461, ECON 150 or ECON 203
    2. Laboratory science courses: BIOL 111/191, BIOL 131/181, BIOL 225/295, CHEM 101/103, PHYS 101/191, SCI 204 or SCI 204

What Will You Learn?

The Manhattan University in-person courses will provide you with the business acumen and laboratory science skills to understand the general needs of the pharmaceutical industry. The three online, asynchronous Pathway courses will introduces students to: 

  1. The “why” of global quality science regulations.
  2. The design, risk, controls, clinical trials, scalability, yield and validation of pharmaceutical products and devices, and;
  3. Designing risk out of products and processes, and conducting scientifically sound investigations.

What Will You Do?

This program is geared towards students looking for careers in the pharmaceutical and medical device industries. Alumni of this program have launched careers in research and development, sales, clinical science, and many other fields. Possible job titles include:
