Faculty, staff and administrators are invited to nominate colleagues they consider to be Distinguished Lasallians. Awardees must have served at Manhattan University for at least five years and must not have already been honored.

Each year, the University recognizes:

  • One faculty member
  • One staff member
  • One administrator

What Are the Criteria?

We are looking for faculty, staff and administrators who:

  • Are committed to excellence
  • Are generous with their time and talent
  • Appreciate and honor other people’s experiences, values and beliefs
  • Think critically as people of faith
  • Show that integrity matters
  • Put faith into action
  • Are trustworthy and ethical
  • Demonstrate solidarity with the vulnerable
  • Seek to alleviate the suffering of others
  • Demonstrate the Lasallian Core Values of Manhattan University: faith in the presence of God, inclusivity and respect for all persons, excellence in education, concern for the poor and social justice, and an emphasis on ethical conduct

Selection Process and Timeline

The Distinguished Lasallian Committee reviews the nominations and determines the Distinguished Lasallians of the Year.

At the appropriate convocation, the Distinguished Lasallians of the Year receive their awards. Staff and administrators are recognized at the Staff and Administrator Convocation in May, and faculty are recognized at the Faculty Convocation in April.

The Distinguished Lasallians are also recognized on the regional level by the District of Eastern North America (DENA) of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, according to the theme of the annual Huether Conference sponsored by the North American Region of Lasallians.

Criteria for Nominations

Distinguished Lasallians are members of the faculty, staff, and administration who have been employed at Manhattan University for at least 5 years and who are nominated as being exemplary in advancing and bringing to life in our contemporary world the Lasallian hallmarks that are part of the core identity of Manhattan University.

Excellence in Teaching

At Manhattan University, "teaching" involves faculty, staff, and administrators in many direct and indirect ways. "Teaching" happens inside and outside of the classroom, office, campus buildings and grounds, playing fields and athletic courts. 

  • Someone who is a notable example of excellence, accomplishment, and/or innovation in the service of students as an educator, teacher, guide, coach, staff or administrator.
  • Someone who promotes the highest virtues of education as transformative, assisting students in becoming "whole" and strives to enrich the artistic, cultural, intellectual, athletic, physical, aesthetic, moral, social, and/or spiritual development of students -especially of those who are most in need.

Respect for Human Dignity

At Manhattan University, "respect for human dignity" is characteristic of students, staff, faculty, and administrators inside and outside of the classroom, office, campus buildings and grounds, playing fields and athletic courts.

  • Someone who honors and respects the dignity of all individuals.
  • Someone who demonstrates a desire to work together in association with others to build and enhance the inclusive community of Manhattan University.

Reflection on Faith and its Relation to Reason

At Manhattan University opportunities for "reflection on faith and its relation to reason" happen inside and outside of the classroom, offices, campus buildings and grounds, playing fields and athletic courts.

  • Someone who engages students, staff, administrators, and faculty in thinking critically and examining our world in the light of faith.
  • Someone who believes in the living presence of God in our students, staff, administrators, and faculty, in our community and in our world.

An Emphasis on Ethical Conduct

At Manhattan University "an emphasis on ethical conduct" is expected to be demonstrated by students, staff, faculty, and administrators inside and outside of the classroom, office, campus buildings and grounds, playing fields and athletic courts.

  • Someone whose actions and character demonstrate ethical conduct.
  • Someone who is generous in assisting others, a great colleague, always lends a hand, goes the extra mile, and supports the best in others - is a person whose actions show that integrity matters.

Commitment to Social Justice

A "commitment to social justice" is the foundation for the founding and existence of Manhattan University.

  • Someone who demonstrates solidarity with the poor and advocates for those suffering from injustices.
  • Someone who shows noteworthy concern for and sensitivity to students and others who are disadvantaged or marginalized by society.
