Manhattan University Launches Bachelor of Science in Data Science

RIVERDALE, N.Y. — Manhattan University will launch a Bachelor of Science in Data Science in fall 2026, expanding its offerings for students preparing to enter an economy increasingly shaped by data-driven and intelligent technologies. 

The new degree draws on the combined strengths of all three of the University's schools, the Kakos School of Arts and Sciences, the O'Malley School of Business and the School of Engineering, and builds on established programs in computer science, computer information systems, business analytics, and electrical and computer engineering. 

"Data science and artificial intelligence are transforming every industry, from finance and health care to engineering and public policy," said Frederick Bonato, Ph.D., president of Manhattan University. "This program ensures that Jaspers graduate not only fluent in these technologies, but prepared to lead with them thoughtfully, ethically and effectively." 

The B.S. in Data Science provides a rigorous foundation in mathematics, statistics, programming and machine learning, preparing students to analyze complex data, build intelligent systems and apply AI-powered solutions to real-world challenges. The interdisciplinary curriculum combines core coursework in mathematics and computer science with electives spanning data mining, applied machine learning, big data technology and data policy, drawn from departments across the University. 

The program culminates in a capstone project in which students apply data science and AI techniques to domain-specific problems in fields such as health care, finance, environmental science and public policy. Consistent with the University's Lasallian mission, the curriculum also challenges students to examine the ethical and societal implications of data and AI, including privacy, bias and transparency, asking not only what intelligent systems can do, but what they should do. 

Demand for the field remains strong. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects nearly 34% job growth for data scientists from 2024 to 2034, making it one of the fastest-growing occupations in the nation, with a median annual wage of $112,590 in 2024.
