Durkin will receive $2,000 for being named a PES Scholar.

“James has been a tremendous student and an asset to our department,” said Mahmoud Amin, Ph.D., associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at Manhattan College. “In class, he has proven to be a take-charge person who is able to successfully develop plans and implement them while working with others. He will also assist me in writing technical research papers and proposal preparations. I expect him to be ready to proceed in industrial career as well as research-based work.”

A native of West Babylon, N.Y., Durkin is on track to graduate in May with a bachelor of science in electrical engineering. He is a member of the Dean's List and a Dean's Award recipient. Durkin is currently working with WSP Engineering an assistant traction power engineer on installations in the MTA's Canarsie Tunnel Upgrade Project.

The IEEE Power and Energy Society recognized 174 PES Scholarship recipients from 96 United States, Puerto Rico and Canadian universities for the 2018-19 academic year.

The initiative recognizes undergraduate students who have declared a major in electrical and computer engineering, are high achievers with strong GPAs with distinctive extracurricular commitments and are committed to exploring the power and energy field.
