The James Patterson Honors Program
The James Patterson Honors Program (JPHP) brings together ambitious students who want to challenge themselves, develop as ethical leaders, and make a meaningful impact. Through distinctive academic experiences, mentorship, and opportunities beyond the classroom, students build confidence, skills, and connections to shape their futures.
The James Patterson Honors Program
The James Patterson Honors Program (JPHP) at Manhattan University was established through the vision and generosity of best-selling author and Manhattan alumnus James Patterson ’69, the program combines interdisciplinary coursework, professional development, mentorship, and experiences that extend learning beyond the classroom. Students develop the communication, collaboration, creative thinking, and leadership skills needed to succeed in an ever-changing world.
Meet James Patterson ’69
Before becoming one of the world's most successful and widely read authors, James Patterson was an English major at Manhattan College, now Manhattan University, where he contributed to the student newspaper, The Quadrangle.
Following graduation, Patterson built a successful career in advertising, eventually serving as the CEO & Chairman of J. Walter Thompson Worldwide. Throughout that time, he continued pursuing his passion for writing.
His debut novel, The Thomas Berryman Number, was published in 1976 after being rejected by 31 publishers and earned the Edgar Award for Best First Mystery. Patterson went on to become the world's best-selling author, publishing hundreds of books across multiple genres, reaching readers around the world. His remarkable career reflects the power of perseverance, creativity, and an education that prepares students to pursue their ambitions.
“Had I not gone to Manhattan, I don’t think I would have wound up running J. Walter Thompson when I was in my 30s and becoming the best-selling author in the world.”
— James Patterson
A Pipeline to Success
A longstanding supporter of Manhattan University, Patterson established the James Patterson ’69 Scholarship to help students pursue their education. His vision eventually grew into something even more ambitious: an honors program that would prepare students not only for successful careers but also for lives of integrity, leadership, and purpose.
Launched in Fall 2025, the James Patterson Honors Program builds on Manhattan University's commitment to academic excellence, mentorship, and community engagement. Students learn alongside a cohort of peers while connecting with faculty, alumni, and accomplished professionals.
“The James Patterson Honors Program helps students become better speakers, better writers, and better thinkers. We help them become more confident, so that when they graduate from Manhattan, they’re totally ready for the world. That’s what this program is. That’s what it’s all about.”
— James Patterson
