Manhattan University Student Receives Prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship

Scholarship Enables Pell Grant Recipients to Study Abroad

Manhattan University proudly announced that David Pozo was awarded the prestigious U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship through the Institute of International Education at the State Department.

According to the Department’s website, the Gilman Scholarship “…supports students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad, providing them with skills critical to our national security and economic prosperity.”

Applicants must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant during the time of their applications.

David Pozo, a Manhattan University student, standing with arms crossed in front of a Manhattan University backdrop.Pozo, a Bronx, NY native and a first generation college student, is a senior at Manhattan University majoring in criminology and minoring in computer science; upon graduation in May, he plans on getting his Masters at John Jay College of Criminal Justice with a focus on forensics and cybersecurity. In addition to the Gilman Scholarship, he was accepted into the America On Tech program, a highly selective initiative designed to provide technical training and career development opportunities to under-represented students, and was the recipient of a Higher Education Opportunity Program scholarship. In addition to his academic credentials, Pozo has been involved in competitive chess since childhood.

According to Pozo, “Chess taught me discipline, critical thinking, and accountability. These translated directly into my academic and personal development. I learned how to break down complex systems, anticipate outcomes, and remain composed in high pressure situations.”

Frederick Bonato, Ph.D., President of Manhattan University stated: “This is such a wonderful opportunity for David. The Gilman Scholarships are well-known for the broadening experience they offer students, and I know that David will take full advantage of studying in a foreign country and all that it offers.”

Pozo’s studies through the Gilman Scholarship will take him to Argentina shortly after his graduation from Manhattan University.
