Manhattan University today announced that Paul Harrison, a junior in the University’s School of Engineering, has been awarded the prestigious IEEE PES Scholarship which carries a $10,000 stipend.
According to the IEEE (the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) website, it is the world’s largest technical professional organization whose core purpose is to foster technological innovation for the benefit of humanity. It is a global network of more that 486,000 engineering and STEM professionals across a variety of disciplines.
The scholarship awarded to Mr. Harrison is given to a high-achieving undergraduate student in an electrical engineering program with a focus on making a future impact across the power and energy industry. To be eligible for the award, a student must be a U.S. or Canadian citizen; the award was established to address the aging workforce within the power and energy sector in those countries.
Harrison, a native of Carmel, NY (Putnam County), originally thought he would be a lawyer. However, during his high school years, he was involved in a stage crew program working on both electrical and sound elements for various productions which started his path to engineering. He is scheduled to graduate in May 2027 with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering with a concentration in power grids and green energy along with a concentration in Applied Artificial Intelligence. He is a recipient of the Manhattan University Trustee Scholarship, awarded to students in the top 5% of the applicant pool, and is a member of the Gamma Alpha chapter of Eta Kappa Nu, positioning him in the top ¼ of his electrical engineering classes. Additionally, he is the Vice President of the IEEE Manhattan University Student Branch and the President of the 7x24 Exchange Student Chapter where he promotes mission-critical/data center industry awareness, particularly in energy efficiency and cooling. He credits the incredible network of Manhattan University alumni and the caring nature of his professors to his success thus far.
Kathryn Jablokow, Ph.D., Dean of the School of Engineering and herself an electrical engineer, commented,
“Paul’s achievements thus far are a true testament to his academic abilities, his leadership skills, and his research activities with faculty from our electrical engineering department. The Jasper network continues to support our current students positioning them to become leaders in their chosen fields. Paul is a superb example of someone who will make a positive impact in electrical engineering and beyond."
According to Harrison, who plans to pursue a master’s degree upon graduation,
"A dream job would be working on grid infrastructure or doing micro-grid work for data centers to lessen their strain on the grid. I want to make a positive lasting impact in my field and hope to give back by also becoming an adjunct professor."
