John Gallagher has been named the new Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Manhattan College, it was announced today by Marianne Reilly, director of athletics. Gallagher most recently served as the Head Coach at the University of Hartford where he led the Hawks to the NCAA Tournament in 2021.
He will officially be introduced on campus next week on a date to be determined.
“John brings more than two decades of college coaching experience to Manhattan and has success and experience in leading a team to the NCAA Tournament,” said Reilly. “He has a track record of excellent recruiting, developing student-athletes and providing a world-class student-athlete experience. John’s values align with ours and I am confident that he will lead our cherished men’s basketball program to unprecedented heights. On behalf of the entire Manhattan College community, we welcome John and his children, Kenna, Alanna, Jack and Mary Kate to our family.”
Gallagher was the head coach at Hartford from 2010-2022, during which he accumulated 169 wins, including 15 wins during the pandemic shortened 2020-2021 season in which the Hawks won the America East Tournament and earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament. Gallagher led Hartford to two other postseason tournaments during his tenure. Prior to Hartford, Gallagher served as an assistant coach at Boston College, the University of Pennsylvania, Hartford, Lafayette College and LaSalle University.
“We will recruit tremendous young men at Manhattan who will succeed in the classroom and on the court,” says Gallagher. “The Manhattan community will be proud to have our student-athletes who will represent the school and the greatest city in the world with pride. With incredible alignment, there is nothing that we cannot achieve together. My family and I cannot wait to join the Manhattan College community and Go Jaspers!”
A Broomall, Pennsylvania, native, Gallagher earned his Bachelor’s Degree from St. Joseph’s University where he played basketball under legendary head coach Phil Martelli.
