Brother Ernest Miller, FSC Joins Manhattan College’s Board of Trustees

Brother Ernest J. Miller, FSC, D. Min., has been appointed to Manhattan College’s board of trustees, after an election by the current members of the board.

Brother Ernest serves as Vice President of Mission, Diversity and Inclusion at La Salle University, and previously served as Vice President of Mission, since joining La Salle in August 2015. During the 2020-21 academic year, he co-chaired the La Salle Joint Commission on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion co-sponsored by the University President and the Faculty Senate President. In June 2021, the Commission's final report was shared with the La Salle community. 

Brother Ernest has worked to revise or implement new mission-focused initiatives for faculty, staff and administrators. The aim is to deepen the knowledge and understanding of the Lasallian charism and mission for today’s educational and spiritual needs. In addition, Brother Ernest works with students inside and outside the classroom to grasp the long arc of the Lasallian story and vision.

A native of New Orleans, Brother Ernest is a member of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, the Roman Catholic religious institute that founded and sponsors the University. He joined the Brothers in 1993, in Philadelphia, to begin his initial formation. In 1998, he made his first profession of vows, and in 2003, he made his final profession of vows.

He served three years (2009-2012) as the Associate Director for Mission and Ministry in the District of Eastern North America (DENA), the geographic area for all the Brothers’ communities and Lasallian ministries in seven states, Washington, DC, Ontario, Canada, and Puerto Rico. Before the creation of DENA in 2009, he served two years (2007-2009) as Director of Education and Lasallian Mission Formation in the former District of Baltimore which encompassed the Lasallian educational ministries in the Mid-Atlantic region.

Prior to his five years in District service, Brother Ernest served as a teacher at three Lasallian secondary schools: Central Catholic High School in Pittsburgh, Pa.; La Salle College High School in Wyndmoor, Pa.; and West Catholic Preparatory High School in Philadelphia. At Central Catholic, he was founding director of the David S. Baginski, FSC Scholars Program, an interdisciplinary studies endeavor for honors-level students. While at West Catholic and La Salle College high schools, he was the debate and speech moderator.

In May 2015, Brother Ernest completed a Doctor of Ministry degree at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. The focus of his doctoral thesis is the intersection of Lasallian education and evangelization and the promotion of justice. He earned a B.A. in political science from Loyola University New Orleans; a M.A. in International Affairs from The Elliott School of International Affairs at the George Washington University; a M.A. in Education from La Salle University; and a Master’s in Liberal Studies from Georgetown University.

Brother Ernest has presented at numerous conferences, workshops and retreats on Lasallian historical and educational themes, Catholic social teaching, church history, human rights, and religious brotherhood, among others. In 2010, he was the Convener of the Lasallian Convocation on the Rights of the Child at the United Nations in New York.
