Gianmarc Manzione ’02 to Return to Campus as Part of Major Author Reading Series

Manhattan College’s Major Author Reading Series (M.A.R.S.) will continue on Thursday, March 26 at 6:30 p.m. with poet and nonfiction writer Gianmarc Manzione ’02.

Manzione is a Pushcart Prize-nominated poet and nonfiction writer whose works have appeared in The New York Times, The Paris Review and The Southern Review. Manzione released his debut collection of poems, This Brevity, in 2006. A second manuscript of poems, “The Panic Inside the Stars,” was a finalist for the New American Poetry Prize.

Manzione also released a nonfiction book, PIN ACTION: Small-Time Gangsters, High- Stakes Gambling, and the Teenage Hustler who Became a Bowling Champion, in Nov. 2014. It is based on Manzione’s Nov. 2012 New York Times story, “When Thugs and Hustlers Ruled Dark Alleys,” which was named a Columbia Journalism Review must-read of 2012.

“My experience at Manhattan College thrust me into a community of mentors who helped me discover and embrace my passions, as well as the courage to pursue them,” Manzione says. “Since entering ‘the real world,’ I have been fortunate enough to indulge those passions in my work life. I am grateful for those professors I had for imbuing me with the determination to construct my life around the things I love.”

Manzione graduated from Manhattan College in 2002 with a degree in English and philosophy and he earned an M.F.A. in English from The New School in 2004. He is currently the editor of Bowlers Journal International, which is the oldest monthly sports magazine in the country.

The event is free and open to the public and will be held in Hayden Hall, room 100. M.A.R.S. is sponsored by the College’s English department and the School of Arts.
