Young students from Christian Brothers High School in St. Joseph, Missouri enjoy their recess out on the playground.  The original school building show here, also known as St. Joseph Commercial College, was located at 13th and Henry Streets, then the eastern edge of a growing city.  During the Civil War, the building was used to quarter, alternatively, both Union and Confederate troops.

Young students from De La Salle High School in Chicago grabbed shovels and took to the streets after the great Midwest Blizzard of 1918.  The storm blanketed Chicago with almost nineteen inches of snow with drifts and mounds piled over twenty feet high.  Chicago was essentially shut down for weeks while citizens came together to dig out.

Young boys from Lincoln Agricultural School line up with their buckets filled with sap collected from tapping the maple trees of the sugar bush on the property.  The boys pour the sap into a large barrel that will then be boiled in the wood-burning stove to make maple syrup.  Syrup-making was one of the many farming practices the boys of Lincoln Agricultural School were trained in.  The school, on about 900 acres of farmland at Lincolndale, about 46 miles north of New York City, was established in 1907 to prepare future farmers to receive training in theory and practice in farm and dairy management and in the care of domestic animals.
