What Is Financial Aid?

Simply put, financial aid is money that helps you pay for the cost of attending college. Most financial aid comes from the federal and state governments, generally in the form of loans and grants. Manhattan University also funds a variety of grants, scholarships, and other awards. Aid can be awarded based on financial need or on merit in academic performance or extracurricular talents.
Financial aid can encompass a wide range of assistance, including:

  • Scholarships and Grants: Awarded based on financial need or merit, these do not need to be paid back.
  • Loans: Funded by either the government or private banks, these must be paid back with interest.
  • Student Employment: Jobs students work while in college, typically in on-campus offices, sometimes funded in part by a federal financial aid award.

How Financial Aid Is Determined

At Manhattan University, financial aid is determined using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA uses the income information you and your family provide to determine how much you can afford to pay for college. Manhattan University then uses that information to determine how much and what kind of aid you receive.

The process is straightforward. After you apply to Manhattan University, submit the FAFSA form online at studentaid.gov. Incoming freshmen should file no later than February 15.

Manhattan University's school code: 002758.
