York & Edinburgh, England and Scotland (Summer)

YorkSpend part of your summer in York and Edinburgh exploring the history, religion, and culture of medieval Britain. Centered in the preserved medieval city of York, this Manhattan University faculty-led program uses cathedrals, abbeys, city walls, and historic streets as the classroom, allowing students to experience firsthand how religious, political, and social forces shaped life in the Middle Ages. With additional travel to Edinburgh and excursions to Durham and Whitby, participants engage directly with the architectural and spiritual legacy of England and Scotland while earning academic credit in history and religious studies.

  • HIST 150 – Roots of History Abroad (3 credits)
  • HIST 290 – Special Topics Abroad: Medieval York (3 credits)
  • RELS 200/300 – Special Topics in Religious Studies: Medieval York  (3 credits)
This course immerses students in the history and religion of England and Scotland during the Middle Ages. The city of York serves as the central case study, offering students the opportunity to explore medieval culture, religion, and daily life through its preserved houses, churches, hospitals, abbeys, streets, and city walls. Students will engage with Britain’s history from the Roman period through the Reformation, examining how religious, social, and political forces shaped medieval life.
