Courses & Credits
This program is open to all majors:
- RELS 200/300: Religion in Portugal (3 credits)
This course examines the history of religion in Portugal, beginning with its pre-Roman roots and tracing its development through the present day. While the majority of the population is Roman Catholic and much of the course material reflects that tradition, students will also study and visit sites connected to Roman, Jewish, and Muslim communities, particularly in Lisbon and other regions of the country.
In addition to religious history, students will engage with broader aspects of Portuguese culture and daily life. Visits to historic landmarks, local markets, and cultural sites — along with exposure to traditional music, art, cuisine, and wine — provide a rich, immersive understanding of Portugal’s cultural heritage. By combining historical study with on-site experiences, students gain insight into how religion, culture, and everyday life intersect across time and place.
Logistics
Participants on this program will travel with a group of Manhattan University students and will be led by an MU faculty member. Tuition, excursions and cultural visits, round-trip flights out of New York City, housing in shared rooms for the duration of the program, some meals, and international health insurance are included in the program fee.
