Courses & Credits
This program is open to all graduate counseling students. School counseling, mental health counseling, and marriage and family therapy majors may earn credit for a required course.
- EDUG 725: Practicum in Groups or EDUG 850: Advanced Practicum for Counselors (3 credits)
This course combines didactic and experiential learning to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of group dynamics and social systems theory. The didactic component consists of lectures and discussions that introduce key concepts, frameworks, and theoretical perspectives related to how groups operate and interact.
The experiential component offers hands-on opportunities to apply these concepts in practice. Students participate in small-group exercises during class sessions, with the primary experiential focus being the group relations conference in London. These activities allow participants to observe, reflect upon, and engage with real-time group events, integrating theory with lived experience.
Throughout the course, students learn to recognize, describe, and analyze group processes as they unfold in the “here and now.” By reflecting on their own participation, they develop greater self-awareness and examine the roles they naturally assume within groups. Through this combination of theory and experience, students build practical leadership skills applicable to a wide range of professional and organizational contexts.
