In this program, students will travel to several major tourism sites across Japan, many of which are Shinto or Buddhist religious landmarks that have stood for more than 300 years. As they visit temples, shrines, and culturally significant landscapes, students will examine how these sites are presented in contemporary Japan through the lenses of historical memory, religious practice, and national and local identity. Course readings will situate these experiences within broader discussions of heritage tourism, helping students understand how tradition is preserved, interpreted, and sometimes reimagined for visitors. Through this immersive study, students will gain insight into the complex relationship between tourism, cultural heritage, and modern Japanese society.
