Spend winter break in Ireland and Northern Ireland exploring the rich musical traditions that have shaped religious and cultural identity across generations. Traveling to Dublin, Derry, Donegal, and Limerick, students examine the relationship between Irish music and the Catholic Church through historical, artistic, and contemporary lenses. Guided by Manhattan University faculty, this immersive program uses cities, sacred spaces, and local communities as the classroom, offering students the opportunity to experience firsthand how music, migration, language, and faith intersect within Ireland’s cultural heritage.

RELS 256/MUSC 260: The Music of the Mass RELS 300: Special Topics - Religious Persecution & Famine in Ireland (3 credits)
The course examines how Irish culture, migration, and musical traditions have shaped the Church’s musical expression, including the use of language, incorporation of Irish folk music, and the role of music in faith formation. Through site visits, liturgical observations, and engagement with local musical practices, students will gain insight into the ways in which Ireland’s musical heritage informs both religious and cultural identity.
