Spend part of your summer in Mexico exploring the rich intersections of literature, culture and cuisine through this Manhattan University faculty-led program. Traveling to Mexico City, Puebla, Hidalgo and Oaxaca, students examine food writing as a literary genre while engaging directly with one of the world’s most dynamic culinary traditions.

By combining textual analysis with immersive cultural experiences, the program invites students to consider how food functions as narrative, metaphor and expression of identity across regions and historical periods.

Courses and Credits

• ENGL 292: Food Writing in Literature, 3 credits

Students travel to Mexico City, Puebla, Hidalgo and Oaxaca for an immersive exploration of one of the world’s most vibrant culinary traditions. This English course examines food writing across different periods of literary history, exploring how food functions as subject, metaphor and cultural lens within literary texts.

As part of the course, students create a digital travelogue documenting their experiences abroad, combining observation, reflection and creative writing. Alongside readings and writing assignments, participants engage directly with Mexico’s culinary culture, sampling iconic regional dishes while examining how food reflects history, social identity and place.

Through these immersive experiences, students deepen their understanding of how food connects literature, culture and everyday life while developing skills in critical writing and cultural analysis.
