Scholarships & Financial Aid
We offer a variety of resources and support to help make study abroad a memorable part of your Manhattan University experience, whether you dream of studying business in Barcelona for a semester or traveling to Japan for ten days as part of a Religious Studies course.
Scholarships
Scholarships can cover a portion or all of your expenses depending on the destination and duration of your program. It’s wise to plan ahead — some application deadlines are a year in advance of travel.
If you have been awarded a scholarship at Manhattan University, a portion of your scholarship money may apply to a Manhattan University semester abroad program. Full Manhattan University scholarship funds will apply to Manhattan University-run full-semester programs (for example, Spring semester in Madrid) as well as MU-affiliated exchange programs. If you're not sure if your program qualifies, inquire with the Office of Study Abroad.
Additionally, the University awards several scholarships specifically for undergraduate study abroad. Information about the scholarships available for a given term is typically sent out to the University community the semester prior to departure (for example, scholarship information for winter and spring programs is usually released in the fall). The scholarships are:
Michael '58 and Aimee Kakos Scholarship
Founded in 2002 by Michael and Aimee Kakos to encourage young Americans to understand and apprecite other cultures and peoples. Tuition assistance will be provided to deserving undergraduates who have been approved for a foreign study program. Applicants must show an appreciation for being given the opportunity to learn more about the world and demonstrate an understanding of other cultures and peoples.
Kate Anne McNeil Study Abroad Scholarship
This scholarship was established to memorialize Kate’s life and is meant to help other students take advantage of the many historic and cultural opportunities available overseas, especially in London.
Major John H. Mark '00 Scholarship
Established in 2015 by family and friends to honor the memory of John H. Mark, Jr., this scholarship provides tuition assistance to students accepted into a study abroad program. It is the goal of the scholarship to honor John's extraordinary spirit of adventure by encouraging productive exploration among young scholars.
External Scholarships
There are hundreds of scholarships offered each year through various groups, organizations, and businesses. Students are strongly encouraged to research available scholarships and to apply to as many as possible. Past students have reported that doing so has made a significant difference in making study abroad more accessible!

Financial Aid
Whether or not you are able to apply some or all of your financial aid towards your study program will depend on many factors, including the length of your program, if it is affiliated with Manhattan University or not, and whether your program charges are assessed by Manhattan University or by a third-party program provider, among other things. Financial aid typically does not apply to short-term summer or winter intersession programs, although there are some exceptions. It can, however, often be used towards full-semester program costs. Come in to speak with a member of the Office of Study Abroad to learn more about how your federal, state, and institutional financial aid can be applied towards study abroad. In addition, contact the Office of Financial Aid for more information on how your individual aid package may be used towards studying abroad.
