Academic Success
Student Success Services
In addition to our peer facilitated services, we offer professional learning specialist services in developmental reading, writing, math, and science. Our professional learning specialists meet with students who need help adjusting to the rigors of university level academics. Specialist services are individualized to meet students' particular learning needs.
Learning Specialist Support Services
Learning Specialist services are free for students but by referral only. Students who think they might benefit from this service can reach out to us at success@manhattan.edu.
Learning Specialist Policies and Procedures
- Matriculated Manhattan University students with a referral from the Director are allowed appointments with a Learning Specialist. Requests must be made via email at success@manhattan.edu.
All sessions are one-on-one individual appointments. No exceptions. - Students who are 15 minutes late to a 1 hour appointment will have their appointment cancelled and the slot forfeited to any eligible student waiting.
- Students will receive a warning via Jasper Connect after their first cancellation. Upon a second cancellation, student appointment privileges will be revoked permanently for the semester. Cancellations are reset at the beginning of each semester.
- Students who no-show once will have their appointment privileges revoked permanently for the semester and will be notified via Jasper Connect. No show totals are reset at the beginning of each semester.
- Students are allowed appointments up to one (1) week in advance.
- It is the expectation that all students working with a LS will be an active participant in the learning process. If a student is; not attending class, not taking notes in class, resistant to the support being offered, or any other reason leading to the advisor viewing the students behavior as indifferent towards their studies, the advisor is within their right to revoke the student's LS privileges.
Workshops & Events
The Center for Academic Success offers workshops, programs and events throughout the academic year.
Online Workshop: College 101
College 101 is a self-paced online Moodle workshop designed to help students understand and adjust to college expectations in and out of the classroom. It is automatically provisioned to the Moodle accounts of all incoming students (new freshmen and transfers) the summer before their arrival on campus and remains available to them throughout their first year. It is also available for self-enrollment to all members of the University community.
College 101 primarily contains activities, lessons and videos designed to inculcate attitudes and habits that support student success, such as self-reflection, decision-making, goal-setting, time management, and professionalism. It also hosts content on academic topics such as active reading, basic principles of college writing, and study skills. Faculty members are invited to submit subject-specific resources, such as style guides for their disciplines. Please reach out to success@manhattan.edu with your submissions or questions about the workshop.
College 101 is also home to the online academic integrity workshop that Manhattan University students are required to take if they are found in violation of the University’s academic integrity policy.
The workshop employs a badging system to reward students for completing activities. Badges are named for the trait a person completing such an activity might display; for example, a student completing activities in the Goal-Setting module earns the Resolute badge. Certain badges can be redeemed for prizes, and all live on the student’s Moodle profile as evidence of activities completed. Professors at the University are encouraged to offer extra credit for completion of College 101 activities.
