From March 7-10, Manhattan College will host a series of events highlighting Peace Week. The Peace Studies program is sponsoring the events, in partnership with the International Studies and Religious Studies departments, and Catholic Relief Services Student Ambassadors.
On Monday, March 7 at 4 p.m. in room 4A of the Raymond W. Kelly ’63 Student Commons, Dana Coniglio ’16 and students from Engineers Without Borders will discuss Building a World Without Borders: Engineers and Peace.
On Tuesday, March 8 at 4 p.m. in Hayden 100, the College will host Fr. Mun Jeong Hyeon and Martha Hennessy to speak about The U.S. Militarization of Korea: A Catholic Response. Fr. Mun Jeong Hyeon is a South Korean Catholic priest who organized the Catholic Priests’ Organization for Justice in the struggle for Korean democracy, joining protests in the 1970s against dictators who killed South Korean pro-democracy organizers.
Hennessy, the granddaughter of Dorothy Day, who co-founded the Catholic Worker movement in the early 1930s, has carried on her grandmother’s legacy. A retired occupational therapist, Hennessy is an outspoken activist who has been imprisoned for protesting war, nuclear power and weapons, the use of drones and the torture of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay. She has traveled all around the world to understand the effects of war and speaks about peacemaking efforts in the tradition of the Catholic Worker movement.
On Wednesday, March 9 at 12:30 p.m. in room 3B of the Kelly Commons, Nuwan Jayawickreme, Ph.D., assistant professor of psychology at Manhattan College, hosts a lunch conversation on The Psychology of Borders.
On Thursday, March 10 at 4:30 p.m. in room 5B of the Kelly Commons, Simon Adams, Ph.D., executive director of the Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect will deliver the annual Cost of War lecture on The Responsibility to Protect and the Future of Borders.
