Charles W. Mills, Ph.D., an award-winning author and John Evans Professor of Moral and Intellectual Philosophy at Northwestern University, will discuss Liberalizing Illiberal Liberalism at the annual Aquinas Lecture on April 10 at 4:30 p.m.
Mills specializes in social and political philosophy with a focus on gender, class and race. He is the author of numerous book chapters, articles and five books. His first book, The Racial Contract (1997), won the Myers Outstanding Book Award for the study of bigotry and human rights in North America.
In addition, his second book, Blackness Visible: Essays on Philosophy and Race (1998), was a finalist for the award for the most important North American work in social philosophy. His most recent book, Radical Theory, Caribbean Reality: Race, Class and Social Domination (2010), is a collection of his Caribbean essays.
He received his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto and has taught at various universities, including Northwestern University, the University of Oklahoma, and the University of Illinois at Chicago, where he was a UIC Distinguished Professor.
The Aquinas Lecture is named after Thomas Aquinas, a Catholic philosopher and theologian, and the event covers a wide variety of liberal arts topics, including philosophy and religious studies.
The Aquinas Lecture is free and open to the public and will be held in the Hayden Hall, Room 100. The Philosophy and Religious Studies departments, and the School of Arts sponsor the annual lecture.
