The American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists™ (AAEES) recently recognized Robert Sharp, Ph.D., P.E., professor of civil and environmental engineering at Manhattan College, as a Board Certified Environmental Engineer (BCEE).
AAEES represents a group of accomplished environmental engineers and Sharp was board certified through eminence. The organization acts as a resource for the public and profession by counseling students interested in an environmental engineering or environmental science career, issuing reports and books on topics, and publishing an annual directory for those seeking environmental experts.
In order to be eligible for nomination, a professional must have 20 years of experience in environmental engineering with 10 years in a senior position. In addition to receiving certification, Sharp was identified for his specialty of waste supply and wastewater.
Focusing on advanced water and wastewater treatment, biological regrowth and corrosion, and bioremediation, Sharp teaches and directs an externally funded research laboratory at the College. He is the Donald J. O’Connor Endowed Faculty Fellow of Environmental Engineering at Manhattan College.
Currently, Sharp’s research results from the active bioprocess lab are discussed in more than 34 peer reviewed journal articles. Graduate and undergraduate research assistants assist in the fundamental and applied research. He has presented 50-plus papers at national and international environmental conferences.
Sharp is also a process specialist for Hazen and Sawyer Engineers in New York City, and is working on a U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) project to select and design a secondary wastewater treatment plant for Dakar, Senegal, to serve more than a million residents. In addition, he is assisting in the design of a first secondary wastewater treatment plant for the city of Bogota, Colombia.
Sharp received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of New Mexico and his doctorate from Montana State University-Center for Biofilm Engineering.
