Endowed Scholarships

Scholarships transform lives. Thanks to generous alumni and friends, Manhattan remains a source of opportunity for all students — regardless of means. For some, need- and merit-based scholarships make the difference between completing or postponing their education.

To better serve these students, we are dedicated to increasing the number of endowed scholarships the College offers. During the 2017–18 academic year, this effort provided 492 students with $2.6 million in aid. Funding an endowed scholarship is a tangible way to provide an enduring resource for aiding students. Scholarships may be named for a relative, faculty member or other individual who has enhanced a benefactor’s life. Over the past two years, generous alumni added the following scholarship endowments to the wide variety the College offers:

Coyle Family Scholarship

Arthur J. Mahon ’55 established this scholarship in 2016 in memory of his wife’s family, providing tuition assistance to students who demonstrate high academic achievement in the School of Liberal Arts.

Joseph P. Gibbons ’57 Memorial Scholarship

Established in 2016, the scholarship provides tuition assistance to students in the School of Liberal Arts with preference to graduates of St. Francis Prep, Queens, NY.

Ramon Joseph ’52, M.D. Scholarship

This award, established in 2016, provides tuition assistance to upper-level students enrolled in the School of Science in preparation for a career in medicine.

Arthur J. Mahon ’55 Scholarship

Arthur Mahon established this scholarship in 2016 to provide tuition assistance to academically superior undergraduates in the Liberal Arts, Science or Business who have unmet financial need.

Major John H. Mark, Jr. ’00 Scholarship

Honoring his memory, family and friends established the scholarship in 2016 to provide tuition assistance for students accepted into a Study Abroad program who have an approved extracurricular project in the form of community service, research or other experiential learning activity.

Thomas J. Moran ’74 Scholarship

Established in 2016 to honor Thomas Moran upon his retirement as president and CEO of Mutual of America, the scholarship provides tuition assistance for students with unmet financial need with a preference for graduates of Monsignor Farrell High School.

Richard V. Robilotti ’65 Merit Scholarship

Richard Robilotti established the scholarship in 2017 to provide tuition assistance to upper-level students who have demonstrated strong academic achievement and have been active in volunteer services.

William D. Ryan ’49, M.D. Scholarship

Established in 2016 in memory of Brother Cyprian James Walton, FSC, the scholarship provides tuition assistance to students enrolled in the School of Science in preparation for a career in medicine.

The Josephine Suarez Memorial Scholarship

James Suarez, Ph.D., former dean of the School of Business and professor emeritus of economics and finance, established this scholarship in 2018 in memory of his mother. It provides tuition assistance to female students with unmet financial need enrolled in the School of Education and Health.

Sportsmen for Charity Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2016 to provide financial assistance to deserving students at Manhattan College.

The Van Hollebeke Family Scholarship

Established in 2018 by charitable bequest from the Estate of Eunice Van Hollebeke, the scholarship provides tuition assistance to academically superior upper-level female students with unmet financial need in the School of Engineering, the School of Science or the O’Malley School of Business.
