“Aging While Female” the Focus of Women and Gender Studies Annual Lecture

An expert on ageism, Ashton Applewhite will serve as the keynote speaker on Tuesday, April 17.

Head shot of Ashton ApplewhiteAshton Applewhite, an expert on ageism, will deliver a talk entitled “Aging While Female,” focusing on the intersections of ageism, gender and sex at Manhattan College’s annual Women and Gender Studies lecture. The event will take place on Tuesday, April 17 at 4:30 p.m. in room 100 of Hayden Hall on campus.

Applewhite is the author of This Chair Rocks: A Manifesto Against Ageism. In 2016, she joined PBS site Next Avenue’s annual list of 50 Influencers in Aging as their Influencer of the Year. Applewhite has been recognized by the New York Times, National Public Radio, and the American Society on Aging as an expert on ageism.

She blogs at This Chair Rocks, has written for Harper’s, Playboy, and the New York Times, and is the voice of Yo, Is This Ageist? Applewhite speaks widely, at venues that have ranged from universities and community centers to the TED mainstage and the United Nations. She is a leading spokesperson for a movement to mobilize against discrimination on the basis of age.

Applewhite will be signing copies of This Chair Rocks at the event. The event is free of charge and open to the general public.
