Anuk Arudpragasam, Author of One of 2016’s Top 10 Novels, to Read at Manhattan College
Arudpragasam will discuss “The Story of a Brief Marriage,” set during the Sri Lankan civil war.
On Wednesday, April 12, acclaimed novelist Anuk Arudpragasam will read from his novel The Story of a Brief Marriage. The event begins at 6:30 p.m. in room 100 of Hayden Hall on the Manhattan College campus.
The Story of a Brief Marriage is set in 2009, during the last few days of the Sri Lankan civil war, when between 20,000 and 70,000 individuals lost their lives. The novel is a haunting depiction of the human cost of war, based on interviews Arudpragasam conducted with survivors of the Sri Lankan war.
Arudpragasam’s first novel, The Story of a Brief Marriage was named one of the top 10 novels of 2016 by The Wall Street Journal, and was also named a Best Book of 2016 by NPR, The Boston Globe, BuzzFeed, The Financial Times, The Globe and Mail and Entropy Magazine.
Arudpragasam received his bachelor’s degree from Stanford in 2010 and is currently completing a doctoral dissertation in philosophy at Columbia University. He is a native of Colombo, Sri Lanka.
The event is co-sponsored by the Office of Mission, the Center for Ethics and Leadership, the Peace Studies program, the Holocaust, Genocide and Interfaith Education Center, the English department and the International Studies program.
