As part of Manhattan College’s Major Author Reading Series (M.A.R.S.), poet Jane Springer will visit Manhattan College on Thursday, April 3 at 6:30 p.m.
An award-winning writer, Springer’s first poetry collection, Dear Blackbird (2007), received the Agha Shahid Ali Prize for poetry from the University of Utah Press. In 2012, her second collection of poetry, Murder Ballad, was published and received the Beatrice Hawley Award. Springer was also honored with a Whiting Writers’ Award, a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Associated Writing Programs’ AWP Intro Award, and the Robert Penn Warren Prize for Poetry.
Notable poet Lynnell Edwards reviewed Murder Ballad and called Springer’s work, “Fearless in its music, indulging luscious sounds and pounding measures. Traversing the despair of the rural south, [she] exploits the urgency and dread of every keening murder ballad, showing how that cleaving is both our undoing and our salvation.”
The series will conclude with Chris Tusa, author of Dirty Little Angels (2009), on Thursday, April 24 at 6:30 p.m. His debut collection of poems, Haunted Bones, was published in 2006.
Designed to engage and expose students to contemporary literature, M.A.R.S. has brought several notable writers to campus for readings and book signings since its inception in 2010.
All of the events are free, open to the public, and will be held in Hayden Hall, room 100. M.A.R.S. is co-sponsored by the College’s English department and the School of Arts, in cooperation with the Women and Gender Studies program.
