As part of National Catholic Sisters Week, Manhattan College will present a film screening of Band of Sisters on Wednesday, March 12 at 7 p.m. The much-publicized documentary chronicles U.S. nuns who became engaged in important social movements in the wake of the Second Vatican Council and brought the church into the modern world.
Produced and directed by Mary Fishman, the film explores the lives of 12 nuns in the aftermath of Vatican II. In particular, Band of Sisters follows two nuns during a four-year span as they advocate for the rights of immigrant detainees and deportees in Chicago. The film aims to promote the sisters and their mission, and to inspire others to strive for social justice.
Sister Theresa Kane, RSM, former president of the U.S. Leadership Conference of Women Religious and featured in the film, will also be on hand to introduce the movie and answer questions.
The screening of Band of Sisters will begin at 7 p.m. and doors will open at 6:30 p.m. in the Scala Academy Room in Leo Hall, Room 215. Manhattan College's Campus Ministry and Social Action and the Visitation Church Social Action Committee are co-sponsoring the event.
