The new minor draws on the combined strengths of all three of the University's schools, the Kakos School of Arts and Sciences, the O'Malley School of Business and the School of Engineering, and builds on established programs in computer science, computer information systems, business analytics, and electrical and computer engineering. "Artificial intelligence touches every discipline, and our students deserve more than a surface-level familiarity with it," said Bridget Chalk, Ph.D., provost of Manhattan University. "This minor gives students in any major, from business to engineering to the liberal arts, a genuine understanding of how AI works and how to use it responsibly in their fields." Open to students in every major across the University, the minor was developed jointly by faculty in computer science, computer information systems, business analytics, accounting, law, and electrical, computer and mechanical engineering. It provides structured, interdisciplinary instruction in AI fundamentals: how intelligent systems work, what their limitations are and how to apply them responsibly. Students choose from a core of upper-level courses in areas including machine learning, data mining, deep learning and generative AI, trustworthy AI, image processing, and AI applications in business and engineering design. Tailored pathways accommodate students with and without prior programming experience, ensuring the minor is both accessible and academically rigorous. Consistent with the University's Lasallian mission, the minor also challenges students to weigh the ethical and societal implications of artificial intelligence, asking not only what intelligent systems can do, but what they should do. The minor is available to students beginning in fall 2026.
