Students Earn Prestigious Awards to Pay for College and Post-Graduate Learning

In 2019, three Manhattan College graduating seniors – Natalia Alvarez ’19, Alia Flanigan ’19 and Emily Hay ’19 – received Fulbright English Teaching Assistant awards for the 2019-2020 academic year through the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. It was the first time that multiple Manhattan College students had received a Fulbright award. 

Previously, Heather O’Connell ’02 (2018) and Paulina Ochoa-Figueroa ’17 (2017) had received Fulbright English Teaching Assistant awards.

The Fulbright Program is the U.S. government’s flagship international educational exchange program and is designed to build lasting connections between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.

Miguel Diaz ’20 was one of 496 college students across the United States to receive an annual Barry Goldwater Scholarship in 2019. A mechanical engineering major and a physics minor, Diaz is hoping to pursue a career in the aerospace industry after graduation.

The Goldwater Scholarship is awarded to college sophomores and juniors who intend to pursue research careers in the natural sciences, mathematics and engineering. Over its 30-year history, Goldwater Scholarships have been awarded to thousands of undergraduates, many of whom have gone on to win other prestigious awards like the National Science Foundation’s Graduate Fellowship, Rhodes Scholarship, Churchill Scholarship and the National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship.

In the last five years, three Manhattan College students have earned a Gilman scholarship to study abroad during the summer. Most recently, Autumn Herndon ’19 was one of approximately 1,000 college students nationwide to receive a Gilman scholarship. The scholarship of $3,500 enabled her to study abroad in Panama.  

The Gilman Scholarship has enabled more than 25,000 outstanding Americans of diverse backgrounds to engage in a meaningful educational experience abroad. The program has successfully broadened U.S. participation in study abroad, while emphasizing countries and regions where fewer Americans traditionally study.

A Staten Island native, Vincent Wiedemann ’19 joined the Neighborhood 360° Fellowship Program after he graduated from Manhattan College in 2019. 

The Neighborhood 360° Fellowship Program is a partnership between Coro NY Leadership and the NYC Department of Small Business Services. During the 10-month program, Fellows are placed in community-based organizations across New York City where they learn new approaches to commercial revitalization and also develop leadership skills through weekly seminars.
