Trailblazer Katie Geneva Cannon To Present at College’s Judith Plaskow Lecture on April 9

Expert on the topics of Women’s and African-American Theology and Ethics to speak at lecture.

Author and religious scholar Katie Geneva Cannon, Ph.D., will present at Manhattan College’s second Judith Plaskow Lecture on Women and Religion on Wednesday, April 9 at 4 p.m.

“We are honored to have Professor Cannon come to Manhattan. She is a distinguished scholar and an inspiration to all who struggle for justice in everyday life,” said Michele Saracino, Ph.D., professor of religious studies.

Recognized as a trailblazer on the topic of Women’s and African-American Theology and Ethics, Cannon frequently writes about overcoming oppression with integrity. She has co-authored six books, including The Womanist Theological Reader (2011), her most recent anthology, and is working on the forthcoming anthology, The Oxford Handbook of African American Theology with Anthony B. Pinn.

Her essays and work have appeared in a variety of prestigious journals, encyclopedias, dictionaries, newspapers and magazines, including The Philadelphia Inquirer, Vogue, Ladies’ Home Journal, The Journal of Feminist Studies in Religion, and Encyclopedia of Women and World Religions.

Cannon is currently the Annie Scales Rogers Professor of Christian Ethics at Union Presbyterian Seminary in Richmond, Va. Prior to this position, she spent nearly a decade at Temple University as an associate professor of religion. She has taught at Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Mass., and New York Theological Seminary. Additionally, she was the first African-American woman ordained in the United Presbyterian Church in 1974, and the first African-American woman to earn a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Union Theological Seminary.

The annual lecture series was established to recognize Judith Plaskow, Ph.D., professor emeritus of religious studies, a revolutionary scholar for her groundbreaking work in feminist theology. The series invites scholar-theologian experts to speak on religion and its relationships with gender, multiculturalism and globalization.

The event is open to the public and will be held in the Alumni Room of the College’s Mary Alice and Tom O’Malley Library at 4 p.m. The Judith Plaskow Lecture is co-sponsored by The School of Arts and Religious Studies department, in cooperation with the Catholic Studies program.
