The politics of developing areas, comparative political systems and institutions of Africa, the Caribbean and Latin America. U.S. national politics and comparative gender, race, ethnicity and class politics, urban politics and African diaspora and migration studies.

Dr. Downie is the author of several articles on the politics of development in post-colonial Jamaica and the Caribbean and on women in politics in Jamaica, the U.S.A., the Caribbean, South Africa and other areas of Africa and the African diaspora. She has completed a book manuscript on the Politics of Independent Jamaica, migrations African and African Diaspora Women in Politics and African Diaspora migrations.
