Peyman Honarmandi

Associate Professor, Mechanical Engineering

Dr. Honarmandi conducts biomimetic research to identify, address, and shed light on human problems. He uses his solid mechanics and design expertise for bioengineering applications. For example, he has used inspiration from the cushion-like microstructure between the skull and brain to propose a design for a new generation of helmets to better protect the head against impacts.

Another avenue of research for Dr. Honarmandi is computational and experimental cell mechanics from the nano- to micro-scale. He studies focal adhesion structures and the role of mechanical signaling in the mechanotransduction of cells. His research focuses on identifying the effect of mechanical loadings, as a form of axial/shear stress or strain, on the physiological behavior of cells. He has also developed a fabrication process to produce single-crystal hydroxyapatite nanomaterials as an artificial bone substitute in different medical applications.

Dr. Honarmandi’s research activities are as follows:

  • Microstructural model for osteocyte mechanotransduction
  • Mechanosensory mechanism of endothelial cells
  • Cell adhesion materials and mechanotransduction at molecular and cellular level
  • Head concussion and brain injury against impact
  • Utilization of graphene as fiber reinforcement in composite materials
  • Design and analysis of microfluidic device to study the effect of growth hormone on cells
  • Reliability-based design optimization of structures with fatigue constraints
