Research
My more recent research involves the integration of the modeling first approach into the teaching of Differential Equations. This approach uses real life situations and technology to show the power of differential equations. The problems proposed deal with such topics as the absorbtion of drugs into the blood stream to the spread of oil spills in an ocean to the system of shock absorbers in an automobile. I have been the PI of a NSF grant for four years. This grant has enabled my co PIs and me to run in-person and virtual workshops on modeling first in Differential Equations to Mathematics faculty throughout the country. These workshops deal with not only how to implement this approach in DE courses but also how to create one's own scenerios. I am on the advisory board for SIMIODE, an open community of teachers and learners using modeling first differential equations in an original way. SIMIODE maintains a website and that supports this approach with hundreds of scenerios that instructors can use in their courses. Previously my research interests involved the use of technology in the teaching and learning of Calculus. I was involved in the integration of computer algebra systems into the calculus curriculum. This work was recognized when I was elected to be a fellow in the International Conference on Technology in Collegiate Mathematics.
Another branch of research that I have been in involved the creation and restructuring of the mathematics courses for our education students. The research involved communication with professors in other countries whose students score much higher than the US on the international exam, PISA. This exams tests the mathematical abillities of students in the eighth grade. It also involved research in to the findings of such sources as the Conference Board of Mathematical Sciences. The result of this research was the creation of three Mathematics courses required of our elementary education students with a mathematics concentration.
