  • Professional Experience and Memberships

    (A) During the period 1980-1982, I was the Director for Research and Development of Nubi Technology, a high technology firm involved in medical instrumentation development, and medical imaging.

    (B)  During the period 1982-1985, I was the Director of Teko Telecom in Greece. Teko Telecom is an Italian company specialized in the design and production of mobile telecommunications, with emphasis on satellite communications, optical components, and repeaters. The sales and revenues of the Hellenic company increased significantly during that period, due to the product outstanding quality and effective strategic marketing.

    (C)  During the period of 1991-1994, I was the Associate Director of the Medical Imaging Laboratory at the University of Tennessee, Memphis, in order to better coordinate the funding efforts of the laboratory and enhanced the research activities. During my tenure, I was able to increase significantly the number of research activities and external funding, while managing the available technical and financial resources successfully.

    (D) Since 1996-present  I am serving as Chairman of the IEEE IM Society TC-19 Technical Committee on “Imaging Systems”, aimed at promoting collaborations between faculty and industry as well as exploring new metrology standards, measuring methodologies, procedures, and techniques. The goals of this committee are:

    • Explore physical and engineering principles, development and applications of new imaging technologies, systems, measurements, and techniques.
    • Organize workgroups among members of different technical background and interests
    • Promote integration and multidisciplinary collaborations
    • Encourage industry-government-academia collaboration
    • Coordinate, and review proceedings andtransactions papers in the area of imaging.

My efforts as Chairman of the TC-19 Technical Committee on Imaging Systems led to the initiatives (E), (F), and (G), reported below:

    (E)  Since 2008-present, I am leading the IEEE Industry-Academia Forum serving both as organizer and chair, since this is an initiative that  has been established within  the IEEE TC-22 Technical Committee on Imaging Systems. I have been able to enroll a number of medium to large size corporation into this initiative and integrate them with the research activities from academia.

    (F)   Since 2004-present, I am leading the organization of the successful IEEE International Conference on Imaging Systems and Techniques, in which I am serving as the general chairman, since its inception (2003); this position requires extensive management, planning, budgeting, logistics, and administrative skills;

    (G) Since 2008-present, I am  leading the efforts of the IEEE International School on Imaging, being the director of the School, an initiative, which recently granted approval by the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement  Society. This initiative is aimed to educate the Industry, and Government on the recent advances, trends, and ongoing progress on the latest developments of imaging technologies, as well as identify, develop and promote knowledge on technical areas of significant interest; this position requires extensive management, planning, budgeting, logistics, and administrative skills. The first IEEE International School on Imaging will take place in October in Beijing, 2013.

    (H) Since 1994, I have successfully led and managed a number of grants and contracts successfully. Being a Defense Contractor,

    • followed religiously the government and university contract handling procedures
    • applied efficient management of resources and planning,
    • kept detailed track of acquisition records and expenditures,
    • wrote a large number of technical reports.
    • exceeded on the expectations of the assigned contacts

Good technical writing skills and effective communication with the program managers and with contract administrators is of paramount significance.

    (I)    My research laboratory handles several multidisciplinary research projects. The Laboratory accommodate a diversified number of students from the Departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering

    (J)    While at the University of Akron, I served(s) at the following committees:

    1. University Graduate Policy Committee (2010-present)
