Juniorates Swimming at Glencoe, circa 1927

A circular swimming pool at the foot of a hill, fed by cold springs, shaded by mighty oaks and curtained by cedar trees, was a favorite spot for the juniors during the summer at Glencoe. The juniorate department, opened in 1888 for boys under sixteen who wish to become Christian Brothers, enjoyed impressive facilities for extracurricular activities and sports. The Christian Brothers of the St. Louis District opened their novitiate at Glencoe, Illinois two years earlier which soon grew into four departments: for the aged and infirm Brothers, the novices, the scholastics and the juniors.

Young students from Christian Brothers High School in St. Joseph, Missouri enjoy their recess out on the playground. The original school building show here, also known as St. Joseph Commercial College, was located at 13th and Henry Streets, then the eastern edge of a growing city. During the Civil War, the building was used to quarter, alternatively, both Union and Confederate troops.

Young students from De La Salle High School in Chicago grabbed shovels and took to the streets after the great Midwest Blizzard of 1918. The storm blanketed Chicago with almost nineteen inches of snow with drifts and mounds piled over twenty feet high. Chicago was essentially shut down for weeks while citizens came together to dig out.

Young boys from Lincoln Agricultural School line up with their buckets filled with sap collected from tapping the maple trees of the sugar bush on the property. The boys pour the sap into a large barrel that will then be boiled in the wood-burning stove to make maple syrup. Syrup-making was one of the many farming practices the boys of Lincoln Agricultural School were trained in. The school, on about 900 acres of farmland at Lincolndale, about 46 miles north of New York City, was established in 1907 to prepare future farmers to receive training in theory and practice in farm and dairy management and in the care of domestic animals.
