# Construction Industry Golf Outing

## The Construction Industry Interest Group

The Construction Industry Interest Group is for Jasper alumni who work in the construction industry or related fields. The group's marquee annual event each summer is the Construction Industry Golf Outing which raises funds to support Manhattan's School of Engineering.

In 2018, the Construction Industry Golf Outing Committee launched a transformative ten-year initiative driven by a deep commitment to the College. The goal is to raise $1 million to renovate and modernize classrooms and labs and to create a state-of-the-art structures lab—a vital educational resource within the Civil Engineering department. These enhancements will give students unparalleled opportunities to apply their engineering skills to real-world projects. The golf outing also offers participants networking opportunities to meet with peers from across the industry.

Joseph Van Etten '57 established the popular event in 1997. Joe's vision was to give Manhattan University alumni in the construction industry a chance to spend the day networking. Joe heavily subsidized the event for its first three years to ensure its success. Originally held at the Lake Isle Golf Course, the event's dinner always began with the story of the site's construction in a former rock quarry.

Eventually, Joe turned the event over to Milo Riverso '81, who chaired it for five years. Attendance grew and the event made surplus funds to assist the University. In 2005, Milo asked Michael McHugh '80 to be his co-chair. With the addition of the civil side of the construction industry, the event expanded to three foursomes deep on each hole. Milo and Mike kept the outing at Lake Isle until 2010, when it briefly moved to Westchester Hills and then the Leewood Country Club, where it remains. After 16 years, Milo moved on to launch a Sportings Clay event. For the next three years, Paul Scariano '94 served as co-chair. Michael McHugh led the event until his passing in 2018. In 2019, John O'Keefe '81 took over for Mike, and in 2020 Tony Canale '94 took the lead.

Your participation in our golf outing is a testament to your commitment to our cause and is deeply appreciated.

### Make an Impact

The outing remains a successful networking opportunity for Manhattan's construction alumni. It also is a solid fundraising event, generating more than $1,230,000 over the past 25 years. The aforemented lab will be called the ***Construction Industry Structures Lab***, recognizing the invaluable contributions of our donors and sponsors, whose support we are truly grateful for. The space will feature a plaque, a testament to the collective effort that made it possible, honoring tournament sponsors and donors at the $8,000 level and above.
