About Us

The Modern Languages & Literatures Department helps you develop the ability to speak, understand, read, and write effectively in a language other than English. By reading and studying literary works by non-English authors, you will discover different means of expression, different ways of life, and different values, as well as being able to read some of the world’s greatest works of literature in the original, untranslated form.

You are encouraged to participate in study abroad for a semester or a summer term. Manhattan College administers several programs in cities around the globe that allow students to transfer a portion, if not all, of their Manhattan College institutional merit scholarship and need-based grant money. In addition to the specific Manhattan College programs, we are partners with several educational networks, allowing you to choose from hundreds of study abroad locations worldwide. See the Study Abroad website for more information.

The Modern Languages & Literatures Department has specific majors and minors in five different languages, and also offers courses in Chinese, German, Latin and Irish.
