## Lisbon, Portugal

Spend part of your summer in Lisbon, Portugal, earning credit toward the 200- or 300-level Religious Studies requirement while exploring the deep connections between religion and Portuguese culture.

Open to all undergraduate students, this faculty-led program uses Lisbon and surrounding regions as the classroom, engaging students with historic sites, cultural landmarks and everyday spaces that reveal how religious traditions have shaped Portuguese history and identity.

## Dates Offered

This is a summer program.

- May 18 to June 1, 2026

## Courses and Credits

This program is open to all majors.

- RELS 200/300: Religion in Portugal, 3 credits

This course examines the history of religion in Portugal, beginning with its pre-Roman roots and tracing its development through the present day. While the majority of the population is Roman Catholic and much of the course material reflects that tradition, students also study and visit sites connected to Roman, Jewish and Muslim communities, particularly in Lisbon and other regions of the country.

In addition to religious history, students engage with broader aspects of Portuguese culture and daily life. Visits to historic landmarks, local markets and cultural sites, along with exposure to traditional music, art, cuisine and wine, provide a rich, immersive understanding of Portugal’s cultural heritage.

By combining historical study with on-site experiences, students gain insight into how religion, culture and everyday life intersect across time and place.

## Logistics

Participants in this program will travel with a group of Manhattan University students and will be led by a Manhattan University faculty member. Tuition, excursions and cultural visits, round-trip flights from New York City, shared housing for the duration of the program, some meals and international health insurance are included in the program fee.
