# Note-Takers, Readers and Scribes

## Note-Takers, Readers and Scribes

Students must request a note-taker, reader or scribe through AIM at the beginning of each semester. If the requested service is not listed as an approved eligibility in AIM, contact the Specialized Resource Center (SRC) at <src@manhattan.edu>.

Students receiving these services are responsible for monitoring the quality of the support provided. Contact the SRC immediately if concerns or problems arise.

### Note-Takers

#### Compensation and Attendance

- Note-takers hired by the SRC will receive $75 per course, per semester.
- Note-takers are responsible for locating a backup note-taker when they are unable to attend class.
- A note-taker’s contract will be terminated after a fourth absence from class.

#### Submitting Course Notes

- Note-takers must upload notes to AIM each week.
- Notes must be submitted as one file for each week.
- The SRC recommends using Adobe Scan and Adobe Acrobat to prepare and combine files. Both applications are available for iPhone and Android devices.

#### Quality Review

The faculty member may review the notes from the first three class sessions. If the notes do not meet the faculty member’s standards, the note-taker’s contract may be terminated.

#### Note-Taker Qualifications

Note-takers must demonstrate proficiency in written communication. Qualifications may include:

- Satisfactory performance in college-level English courses.
- A recommendation from a faculty member.
- A writing sample requested by the SRC.
- Completion of all prerequisite coursework required for the course.
- Legible handwriting, as determined by the SRC.
- A current telephone number on file with the SRC.

All note-takers must complete a W-9 form and have it on file with the SRC.

### Readers and Scribes

#### Compensation and Attendance

- Readers and scribes are paid the standard student-aide hourly rate established by Manhattan University. The rate is subject to change.
- Readers and scribes who cannot attend a scheduled session must contact the SRC at least 24 hours before the appointment.
- A reader’s or scribe’s contract will be terminated after a third canceled appointment.

#### Quality Review

The faculty member may review the first three assignments or tests supported by a reader or scribe. If the work does not meet the faculty member’s standards, the reader’s or scribe’s contract may be terminated.

#### Scribe Qualifications

Scribes must demonstrate proficiency in written communication.

#### Reader Qualifications

Readers must meet the same general qualifications as scribes. Instead of demonstrating written communication and legible handwriting, readers must demonstrate oral reading proficiency.
