## What Sets Us Apart

The English major at Manhattan University builds a coherent, informed understanding of literary texts and the ability to express it with clarity and force. You gain a broad foundation in world literary traditions, then personalize your path across five areas of study, all in small classes led by award-winning scholar-teachers who are devoted to the classroom.

A Path You Personalize

Choose across five areas: literary history and national traditions, theory and media, global and cultural perspectives, writing, and author and genre. You shape a major around the texts and questions that matter most to you.

Award-Winning Scholar-Teachers

Learn from faculty whose expertise spans literary and writing studies and who are wholly devoted to the classroom. They know you by name, and you come to know them through readings, research, and informal gatherings.

Small Classes, Real Discussion

Small class sizes turn every seminar into a genuine conversation. You argue ideas, test interpretations, and sharpen your thinking alongside peers and professors who take your work seriously.

Write in Every Genre

Develop your voice through essays, fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction. Workshops and writing-intensive courses help you refine craft, technique, and style across forms.

Critical and Creative Thinking

Observe and analyze complex information, build logical and eloquent arguments, and make meaningful connections across disciplines. These are habits of mind that travel into any career.

Faculty-Mentored Research

Collaborate with professors on research projects, an essential experience for students considering graduate study. Many of these partnerships lead to journal publications and conference presentations.
