Seven Jaspers Selected to MAAC All-Academic Team in Basketball

Seven Manhattan College basketball players have been named to the 2009-10 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) All-Academic Team, six from the Lady J’s.  Highlighting the selections were juniors Alicia Marculitis (Worcester, MA) and Nadia Peters (Bronx, NY) who both earned a place on the All-Academic squad for the second straight season. Also earning All-Academic Team selections were sophomores Alyssa Herrington (Cambridge, NY), Lindsey Loutsenhizer (North Huntingdon, PA), Laura Rivera (Elmont, NY) and Kerri White (Flushing, NY).  On the men's side, Manhattan junior Nick Walsh (Bronx, NY) was selected. In order to be named to the team, student-athletes must have completed at least two semesters at their institution and have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.20.  Manhattan tied Marist and Niagara for the most women's selections in the league. Pacheco, Loutsenhizer Earn All-MAAC Selections on Lady J’s

Senior guard Michelle Pacheco (Bronx, NY) was named to the All-MAAC First Team and sophomore forward Lindsey Loutsenhizer (North Huntingdon, PA) earned a place on the All-MAAC Second Team. Pacheco leads the MAAC with 5.0 assists per game and ranks second in the league with 2.7 steals per game.  She is also the MAAC's fourth-leading scorer, averaging 15.3 points per game.  Pacheco also ranks sixth in the MAAC in both field goal percentage (.409) and free throw percentage (.765). Pacheco shared MAAC Player of the Week honors on Feb. 8. Loutsenhizer, who was a member of last season's MAAC All-Rookie Team, leads the Lady Jaspers and ranks fourth in the MAAC in scoring, averaging 15.6 points per game.  She is also Manhattan's top rebounder, averaging 6.5 boards per contest, and she ranks second in the league in field goal percentage (.471).  She has recorded six 20-point games this season and was named MAAC Player of the Week on Feb. 15.

 

Nieto Selected MAAC Baseball Player of the Week

Senior outfielder Kevin Nieto was named MAAC Player of the Week as announced on March 9. Nieto hit .556 (10-18), drove in eight runs and had three steals to help the Jaspers take three of its four games at Delaware in early March. Nieto, the MAAC Preseason Player of the Year, scored six runs, had two doubles and blasted his first home run of the season against the Blue Hens. He recorded a .833 slugging percentage and .636 on-base percentage. Nieto is batting .429 with nine RBIS and nine runs over the Jaspers' first eight games. Read.

 

Ten Jasper Swimmers Named to MAAC All-Academic Team

Ten Manhattan swimmers were among the athletes who comprise the 2010 MAAC Men's and Women’s Swimming and Diving All-Academic Team, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference has announced. To be eligible for the MAAC All-Academic Team, a student athlete must complete two semesters at their institution and hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a 4.0 scale.  The Men’s honorees were seniors Matthew Kaftanski (Snohomish, WA) and Nicholas LaBanca (Neptune, NJ); junior Christopher Tucci (Midland Park, NJ) and sophomore Robert Kehoe (Katonah, NY). On the Ladies team, the honorees were: seniors Deborah Atwell (Lindenhurst, NY) and Catherine Chan (Hopewell Junction, NY); junior, Kayla Hutzler (Miller Place, NY) and sophomores, Brianne Carroll (Brooklyn, NY), Mary Katherine O'Leary (Sparta, NJ), and Patricia Scherpf (Belle Harbor, NY).

 

Jaspers Sweep Weekly Baseball Awards

Manhattan junior third baseman Chad Salem was named MAAC Baseball Player of the Week and senior Tom Costigan was selected MAAC Pitcher of the Week. Jaspers' red-shirt freshman catcher Ramon Ortega earned MAAC Rookie of the Week honors as Manhattan (7-4) won three of its four contests in early March. Read.
